* Group A: 70 patients with any type of lung cancer eligible for lung cancer surgery
* Group B: 30 patients with any type of lung cancer not eligible to surgery (small-cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, large-cell carcinoma).

60 controls (group C) matched for age, gender, smoking history.

To answer the question whether a disease specific profile of breath in patients with lung cancer can be detected by an untargeted metabolomic study using exhaled breath analysis by mass spectrometry.

Exhaled Breath Analysis by Secondary Electrospray Ionization - Mass Spectrometry (SESI-MS) in Patients With Lung Cancer

The primary outcome will be the lung cancer specific mass spectrometric profile of VOCs of exhaled breath analysis (markers of lung cancer in exhaled breath).

The acquired profiles of mass spectral VOCs before and after lung cancer surgery will be analysed for significant differences.

Liver Extracts

Patients who with pulmonary nodules in computed tomography and planned to receive thoracic surgery will be included. And those who have other types of cancer, received anti-tumor treatment before surgery, liver disease, or infections will be excluded.

Adult participants (\>18 yr) who plan to receive annual physical examination and low-dose computed tomography will be included. And those who have history cancers, received anti-tumor treatment before surgery, liver disease, or infections will be excluded.

Exhaled breath of each participant will be collected with air bags and directly detected by a high-resolution high-pressure photon ionization time-of-ﬂight mass spectrometry (HPPI-TOFMS).

Early detection is critical to improve the overall survival of lung cancer. Endogenous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be derived from many different metabolic pathways. On the other hand, cancer cells have different metabolism patterns compared with normal cells. Thus, detecting VOCs in exhaled breath using highly sensitive mass spectrometry would be a promising approach for lung cancer detection.

Endogenous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be derived from many different metabolic pathways. VOCs can be transported to the alveoli through the blood circulation and expelled by exhalation. Changes in VOCs production, clearance, and alterations in lung air-blood exchange functions can lead to aberrant VOCs profiles in the exhaled breath. Testing exhaled breath has the advantages of being completely non-invasive and easy to collect, and has been considered as a perfect approach for disease diagnoses and therapeutic monitoring. Many clinical studies have found that VOCs in exhaled breath are closely related to disease status. Specific VOCs alterations have been identified in many tumors, especially lung cancer.

In this study, we use a highly sensitive mass spectrometry to detect exhaled VOCs of lung cancer patients and healthy people. A lung cancer diagnosis model based on mass spectrometry data and support vector machine will be initially established and validated.

Exhaled breath samples will be collected with air bags.

In this study the Investigators aim to determine specific volatile compounds present in breath samples of patients with oral cavity or oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma before and after tumour resection or before and after chemotherapy +/- radiotherapy using gas chromotography-mass spectrometry. The Investigators hypothesize that study participants with a tumour will display a distinct set of volatile organic compounds than can serve as potential cancer biomarkers.

Head and neck cancer diagnosis is devastating as it frequently disrupts one's ability to communicate, swallow and breathe. Each year, physicians diagnose approximately 650,000 cases of head and neck cancer worldwide. Many people with head and neck cancer have their cancer detected late, and this can result in a poor clinical outcome. One strategy to improve the clinical outcomes for people with a head and neck cancer is to develop a non-invasive screening assay using breath biomarkers. Such a diagnostic tool will identify at-risk individuals early, and potentially offer improved and cost-effective treatment.

The idea of using human breath samples to detect cancer began with the observation that dogs can be trained to "sniff out" certain types of cancers from urine and blood. Since then the presence of various volatile organic compounds from many types of cancers, including: lung, skin, breast, prostate, and bladder have been characterized. These studies are ongoing, but promise to revolutionize the way physicians screen cancer in the future.

In this pilot study, the Investigators aim to determine specific volatile organic compounds present in breath samples of patients with oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer before and after tumor resection, or before and after definitive chemotherapy/radiotherapy. As head and neck cancer can result in significant functional deficit, early detection is the key to improving clinical outcome. Much anecdotal evidence exists for the presence of distinct odor emissions from the tumor bed of head and neck cancer patients. Therefore, the identification of specific volatile organic compound to head and neck cancer will undoubtedly lead to a novel, cost-effective screening strategy for early detection of head and neck cancer.

A Prospective Cohort Study to Determine Specific Volatile Organic Compounds Present in Breath Samples of Patients With Oral Cavity or Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma Using Gas Chromotography-mass Spectrometry

Breath samples of patients with oral cavity or oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma will be compared before treatment - surgery or radiotherapy/chemotherapy, and then one month after completion of treatment - surgery or radiotherapy/chemotherapy
