The goal of this psychosocial research study is to learn about the knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes that people have toward screening for colorectal cancer. Another goal is to study how families communicate about colorectal cancer risk and colorectal cancer screening, with each other and with health care providers.

Objectives:

1. To evaluate psychosocial and external factors influencing colorectal cancer (CRC) patients' communication with their first-degree relatives (FDRs) about CRC risk and screening information.

   Using measures of knowledge, health beliefs and behavior, family closeness, openness and motivation to discuss CRC and screening, distress, provider support and background variables (sociodemographics, access to care, and medical history), we will conduct a cross-sectional study to evaluate factors influencing CRC patients' communication about CRC risk and screening information to their FDRs.
2. To evaluate psychosocial and external factors associated with CRC screening behavior among first-degree relatives of CRC patients.

Using measures of knowledge, health beliefs and behavior, family closeness and subjective norms, distress, provider interactions, benefits/barriers, and background variables (race/ethnicity, sociodemographics, access to care, and medical history), we will conduct a cross-sectional study of FDRs of CRC patients recruited under Aim 1 to evaluate factors associated with CRC screening behavior (specifically, colonoscopy adherence).

You will be interviewed by a member of the study staff over the telephone. You will be asked about your awareness of screening tests for colorectal cancer, and your attitudes toward colorectal cancer screening. You also will also be asked about your family's past use of these screening tests, and how you discuss colorectal cancer risk and screening with your family and health care providers. Some demographic information also will be collected (such as your age or marital status). The questionnaire will take between 30 and 45 minutes to complete.

Your answers to the questions and your personal information will be kept strictly confidential. Your questionnaire answers will be identified with a code number, rather than a name, so that you cannot be identified.

This is an investigational study. Up to 325 colorectal cancer patients and their close relatives may take part in the study. All will be enrolled MD Anderson.

To determine the prevalence of colorectal neoplasms in first degree relatives of those affected with sporadic colorectal cancer using colonoscopy as a screening tool. The prevalence will be compared to that of a defined matched cohort.

Colorectal cancer is a second commonest tumor in Hong Kong and the second commonest cause of cancer related death. About 1 in 23 males will develop colorectal cancer in his life time. The disease tends to cluster in families. This may be a combination of factors including shared genes, shared environment or chance. Known familial syndromes occur in only about 5% of cases. The majority is not well understood and labelled sporadic colorectal cancer. The screening strategy in families of subjects with colorectal cancer has not been defined. Colonoscopy is among the most sensitive and specific screening tool for colorectal neoplasm. The current study determines the prevalence of adenomas among first degree relatives of patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer. To quantify risk in this cohort, a case control analysis is used. The prevalence of the cohort is compared to that of a control population. The control group consists of relatives of patients with normal colonoscopic findings during the same study period.

We will send 3 sets of materials via mail, containing information about melanoma prevention and detection, 1 set each month for 3 months. Materials published by:

* The American Cancer Society
* The American Academy of Dermatology
* The Skin Cancer Foundation

The pamphlets contain information about ways to reduce risk for skin cancer including:

* Sun protection practices
* Risk factors for melanoma
* Information about what melanoma looks like
* How to do skin self-examinations

There will also be a telephone discussion with a health educator, discussing melanoma and other information contained in the pamphlets.

Reading materials and discussions

We will send 3 separate pamphlets created specifically for participants. We will send 1 pamphlet each month for 3 months. The information in the pamphlets will be based on answers from the first survey. These pamphlets will contain information about:

* Melanoma and skin cancer protection guidelines
* The benefits of skin screening practices
* Ways to protect yourself from the sun

In addition to these pamphlets, there will be a telephone discussion with a health educator to discuss melanoma and other information contained in the pamphlets.

Both groups will complete 3 surveys; at the beginning, 3 months later, 6 months after the second survey. Each survey will ask about:

* knowledge of melanoma
* current and past skin cancer screening practices
* current and past sun protection practices
* attitudes about skin cancer and sun protection
* feelings about relative's melanoma diagnosis and treatment

The purpose of the investigators' study is to find the best way to provide information about sun protection and skin cancer detection. The investigators want to see which of two methods most improves sun protection and screening attitudes and practices. The investigators hope to improve these attitudes and practices among people who are at higher risk for melanoma. People at higher risk for melanoma are first degree relatives (mother, father, sibling or child) of people diagnosed with melanoma.

Eligible patients will be contacted to find out whether they have any living first degree relatives that we may contact to discuss their participation in our study.

Eligible first degree relatives (FDRs) will participate in our study as outlined under Interventions.
