RATIONALE: Acupuncture may help relieve hot flashes in women with breast cancer. It is not yet known whether acupuncture is more effective than a placebo in treating hot flashes in women with breast cancer

PURPOSE: This randomized clinical trial is studying acupuncture to see how well it works compared to a placebo in treating hot flashes in women with breast cancer.

OBJECTIVES:

Primary

* Determine whether acupuncture, compared to placebo, reduces the incidence of hot flashes in women with breast cancer.

Secondary

* Determine the long-term effects of acupuncture on hot flashes.

OUTLINE: This a randomized, placebo-controlled, multicenter study. Patients are stratified according to concurrent treatment with selective estrogen receptor modulators, gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogs, or aromatase inhibitors (yes vs no), concurrent use of hot flash medication or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (yes vs no), baseline hot flash frequency (\> 7 per day), and menopausal status at diagnosis (premenopausal vs postmenopausal). Patients are randomized to 1 of 2 treatment arms.

* Arm I (treatment): Patients receive 8 acupuncture treatments over 4 weeks.
* Arm II (control): Patients receive 8 placebo acupuncture treatments over 4 weeks. Beginning at week 7, patients are offered 8 true acupuncture treatments over 4 weeks.

Patients in both arms complete a "hot flash" diary for 1 week before treatment and then periodically during and after treatment.

After completion of study treatment, patients are followed periodically.

PROJECTED ACCRUAL: A total of 80 patients will be accrued for this study.

RATIONALE: Hypnosis may be effective in decreasing hot flashes in breast cancer survivors.

PURPOSE: This randomized clinical trial is studying how well hypnosis works in treating hot flashes in breast cancer survivors.

OBJECTIVES:

* Determine the efficacy of hypnosis in controlling hot flashes in women who are breast cancer survivors.
* Determine the extent to which hypnotizability is related to the success of the hypnotherapy intervention.

OUTLINE: This is a randomized, controlled study. Patients are stratified according to age, gender, race, and educational background. All patients complete a Hot Flash Daily Diary to record frequency and severity of hot flashes for 1 week. Patients are then randomized to 1 of 2 treatment arms.

* Arm I (hypnotherapy): Patients undergo hypnotherapy once a week for 5 weeks. Patients complete the Hot Flash-Related Daily Interference Scale, the Hospital Depression and Anxiety Sub-scale, the CES Depression Scale, and the MOS-Sleep and Sexual Function Scales in week 5 after the last hypnotherapy intervention. Patients also complete another Hot Flash Daily Diary for 1 week in week 6 and are administered the Stanford Hypnotic Clinical Scale in week 7.
* Arm II (control): Patients receive no contact for 4 weeks. Patients complete the questionnaires as in arm I in week 5. Patients also complete another Hot Flash Daily Diary for 1 week in week 6 and are administered the Stanford Hypnotic Clinical Scale in week 7.

PROJECTED ACCRUAL: A total of 60 patients will be accrued for this study.

Acupuncture treatments will be administered by a qualified practitioner twice a week for the first four weeks and once per week for an additional 6 weeks. Sterile, disposable Seirin needles will be placed bilaterally at the point Gallbladder 34, and along the spine at Bladder 15, Bladder 23, and Bladder 32. Low intensity electrostimulation at 2 Hz will be used for both Bladder 23 and Bladder 32. Points will also be placed unilaterally at Governing vessel 20, Heart 7, Pericardium 6, Liver 2, and Spleen 6

Patients will utilize the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess if the patient is an overall good sleeper or a poor sleeper.

fatigue assessment and management

Patients will be asked to report hot flash frequency and severity daily using the hot flash diary (HFD) and hot flash severity guidelines (HFSG) throughout the treatment period.

Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) will be used to assess the patient's overall vitality.

Hot Flash Related Daily Interference Scale (HFRDIS)will be used to self-report hot flash related quality of life.

RATIONALE: Acupuncture may help relieve hot flashes in patients with prostate cancer.

PURPOSE: This clinical trial is studying how well acupuncture works in treating hot flashes in patients with prostate cancer who are undergoing androgen deprivation.

OBJECTIVES:

* Determine the impact of acupuncture therapy on the frequency and intensity of hot flashes and the quality of life of patients with prostate cancer undergoing androgen deprivation.
* Determine if blood serotonin and urinary 5-HIAA are increased in patients treated with acupuncture.
* Determine if plasma calcitonin gene-related peptide and MHPG are reduced in patients with hot flashes due to androgen deprivation treated with acupuncture.
* Determine the ability of tongue diagnosis, a traditional Chinese clinical assessment method, to predict clinical and biological changes in these patients.
* Determine the effect of acupuncture on insomnia and loss of vitality caused by hot flashes in these patients.

OUTLINE: Patients undergo acupuncture for 30 minutes twice weekly for 4 weeks and then once weekly for an additional 6 weeks.

Quality of life is assessed at baseline, at weeks 2, 4, 6, and 10, and then at 6 weeks after completion of study treatment.

After completion of study treatment, patients are followed at 6 weeks.

PROJECTED ACCRUAL: A total of 25 patients will be accrued for this study.
