To investigate whether nonthermal low level laser acupuncture has beneficial effects on nausea and vomiting in children receiving highly emetogenic chemotherapy for a malignant solid tumor. In a previous crossover study comparing needle acupuncture to no intervention in an otherwise similar setting we found beneficial effects, but this trial was not even single-blinded and therefore the results are questionable. The hypothesis is that active laser acupuncture is more effective than placebo laser acupuncture concerning episodes of retching/vomiting (primary outcome measure) and rescue antiemetic medication (secondary outcome measure) with a fix standard antiemetic medication

Pseudo-laser acupuncture

This is a prospectively randomized and double-blinded clinical study. Cancer patients were suffered from the taxanes-induced joint pain, and would be advised to receive laser acupuncture in specific points to relieve pain. Clinical effects of analgesic changes would be evaluated before and after the intervention. The inflammation associated indices would be further analyzed to reveal the therapeutic mechanism of laser acupuncture. The laser acupuncture was expected to relief taxanes-induced adverse effects in patients and also can improve patients' life quality.

The current clinical study is prospectively randomized and double-blinded, and practice in Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Linkou, TaoYuan and Taipei branches. All 90 participants suffered from taxanes-induced myalgia and Arthralgia, and will be randomly assigned into the experimental groups (45 participants) and the control group (45 participants). The experiment group would arrange laser acupuncture on day1 and day3 after Taxanes treatment, besides the control group arrange pseudo-laser acupuncture. In the mean while, blood tests were performed with the C-Reactive protein, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, Interleukin-6 for each participants. Evaluation would be records on day1, day3, and day 8 after Taxanes treatment.

Participants would be 90 cancer patients accepted Taxanes treatment who are suffered from myalgia and Arthralgia. The investigators would put 45 participants in experimental groups and the other 45 participants in control group with randomization.

The investigators would put eye masking over participants. The care providers would not know the laser acupuncture device or pseudo-laser acupuncture device with randomization. The investigator did not know which group the participants belonged with.

Patients in the Real laser acupuncture group will receive real laser pen irradiation.

Patients in the Shame laser acupuncture group will receive shame laser pen irradiation.

This study will use German-made low-level laser pen (Al-Ga-As diode laser, 810nm, NIR, Physiolaser Olympic Basic, RJ laser). The parameters are power of 100mW, frequency of Bahr, apply on acupoint. Well will irradiate each point for 2 J. Each patient will receive this treatment six times for one week.

The aim of this study is to examine the clinical effect of laser acupuncture on improving cancer-related fatigue

This study adopted a randomized controlled design, 2-arm trial cross-over study. All eligible patients included in the study agreed to participated and signed the informed consent from and the study procedures were approved by the ethical committee of Taichung Tzu Chi general hospital (REC110-09). Patients were recruited from the hematology oncology department of Taichung Tzu Chi general hospital. After random assignment to 2 groups, patients in the RS and SR groups will receive real and shame laser acupuncture. Before laser acupuncture, one week later, we will evaluate the patient-reported cancer-related fatigue index and other co-morbid symptoms.

Randomized controlled, double blind, cross-over study.

After random assignment to 2 groups, patients in the RS and SR groups will receive real and shame laser acupuncture (single blinding), six consecutive times every day.

The subjects in the experimental group will receive 0.375 J of energy at each of the following acupoints: LI4 (Hegu, B3), LI11 (Quchi, B2), PC6 (Neiguan, B3), ST36 (Zusanli, B2), ST37 (Shangjuxu, B2), ST39 (Xiajuxu, B2), SP4 (Gongsun, B3) , SP9 (Yinlingquan, B2).

The subjects in the control group will receive sham LA treatment, without any laser output (no stimulation) at the same acupoints used in experimental group.

Laser acupuncture is a non-invasive therapy that involves stimulation of traditional acupoints with low-intensity, non-thermal laser irradiation.

Constipation is one of the most common complications in patients with advanced cancer.

The aim of this protocol designed as a double-blind randomized controlled trial is to investigate the efficacy of laser acupuncture (LA) therapy on constipation in patients with advanced cancer.

The participants in each group will receive real (with energy output) or sham (without energy output) laser acupuncture. The feelings of participants in each group are not different. The care provider and outcomes assessor don't involve the random allocation and don't know if participants receive real laser acupuncture.

Effect of Laser Acupuncture on Constipation in Patients With Advanced Cancer: a Prospective Double-blind Randomized Controlled Trial

CSBM is defined as an spontaneous bowel movements associated with a sensation of complete evacuation. The number of CSBM within one week will be recorded.

Estimated using a 10-cm visual analogue scale with anchor points of 0 (no discomfort) and 10 (maximum discomfort).

A five-symptoms questionnaire for measuring the severity of constipation including straining during defecation, abdominal pain during defecation, hard stools, sensation of incomplete evacuation, and sensation of anorectal obstruction or blockage. Each item is rated on a four point Likert scale that ranges from severe symptom (4 points) to no symptom (1 point).

Measured by auscultation of the lower right abdomen with a stethoscope.
