RATIONALE: Interferon alfa may interfere with the growth of the cancer cells and slow the growth of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of interferon alfa-2b in treating patients who have advanced low-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

OBJECTIVES: I. Determine the response in patients with minimally treated or previously untreated advanced low-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma treated with pegylated interferon alfa-2b. II. Determine the effects of this treatment regimen on the immune system by measuring T-cell subsets and NK cells in this patient population. III. Determine event-free and progression-free survival in this patient population treated with this regimen. IV. Evaluate the toxicity profile of this treatment regimen in these patients.

OUTLINE: Patients receive pegylated interferon alfa-2b subcutaneously once weekly for 6 months in the absence of disease progression or unacceptable toxicity. Upon completion of treatment, patients are followed every 6 months for at least 2 years.

PROJECTED ACCRUAL: A total of 30 patients will be initially accrued for this study. Additional patients will be accrued if acceptable responses are seen in the first cohort.

5 years pegylated interferon alfa + 5 years follow up

RATIONALE: Interferon alfa may interfere with the growth of the cancer cells. It is not yet known if this treatment is more effective than observation following surgery for stage III melanoma.

PURPOSE: Randomized phase III trial to determine the effectiveness of interferon alfa in treating patients who have undergone surgery for stage III melanoma.

OBJECTIVES:

* Compare the effect of adjuvant therapy with pegylated interferon alfa vs observation, in terms of distant metastases-free survival, in patients with previously resected stage III melanoma.
* Compare the overall survival in these patients after treatment with pegylated interferon alfa vs observation.
* Determine the toxicity of pegylated interferon alfa in these patients.
* Determine the compliance of these patients treated with pegylated interferon alfa.
* Compare the quality of life in these patients after treatment with pegylated interferon alfa vs observation.

OUTLINE: This is a randomized, multicenter study. Patients are stratified according to type of nodal involvement (N1 vs N2), number of positive nodes (1 vs 2-4 vs 5 or more vs not assessed), Breslow primary (T1-2 vs T3 vs T4 vs unknown), ulceration of primary tumor (absent vs present vs unknown), sex, and center. Patients are randomized to one of two treatment arms.

* Arm I: Patients receive pegylated interferon alfa subcutaneously weekly for 5 years.
* Arm II: Patients undergo observation only. Treatment continues in the absence of distant metastases or unacceptable toxicity.

Quality of life is assessed at baseline, and then at months 3, 12, 24, 36, 48, and 60.

Patients are followed every 6 months for 5 years.

PROJECTED ACCRUAL: A total of 1,200 patients (600 per treatment arm) will be accrued for this study within 1.5-2 years.

RATIONALE: Drugs used in chemotherapy use different ways to stop tumor cells from dividing so they stop growing or die. Interferon alfa may interfere with the growth of cancer cells. Combining chemotherapy with interferon alfa may kill more tumor cells.

PURPOSE: Phase II trial to study the effectiveness of combining temozolomide and interferon alfa in treating patients who have stage III or stage IV melanoma.

OBJECTIVES:

* Determine the response rate in patients with advanced melanoma treated with temozolomide and pegylated interferon alfa.
* Determine the toxicity profile of this regimen in these patients.
* Determine the duration of disease response and overall survival of patients treated with this regimen.

OUTLINE: Patients are stratified according to CNS metastases (yes vs no).

Patients receive oral temozolomide once daily on weeks 1-6 and pegylated interferon alfa subcutaneously once weekly on weeks 1-8. Courses repeat every 8 weeks in the absence of disease progression or unacceptable toxicity.

PROJECTED ACCRUAL: A total of 23-61 patients (12-35 without CNS metastases and 11-26 with CNS metastases) will be accrued for this study within 18 months.

RATIONALE: Interferon alfa may interfere with the growth of cancer cells.

PURPOSE: Phase I/II trial to study the effectiveness of interferon alfa in treating patients with advanced kidney cancer.

OBJECTIVES: I. Determine the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of pegylated-interferon alfa-2a in patients with advanced or metastatic renal cell carcinoma. II. Evaluate the safety profile of the MTD in this patient population. III. Determine the objective response rate, time to response, duration of response, time to progression, and survival rate in this patient population.

OUTLINE: This is a dose escalation, open label, multicenter study. Patients receive pegylated-interferon alfa-2a (PEG-IFN) subcutaneously once a week for 24 weeks. Dose escalation of PEG-IFN continues until the maximum tolerated dose (MTD) is determined. The MTD is defined as the dose preceding that at which 2 of 6 patients experience dose limiting toxicity. After the MTD of PEG-IFN is determined, additional patients are treated at this dose level. These patients may continue treatment after the first 24 weeks for up to 1 year, in the absence of disease progression. Patients are followed for 4 weeks.

PROJECTED ACCRUAL: A total of 46-58 patients will be accrued for this study within 9 months.
