Breast Neoplasms

Patients with suspected breast cancer will be recruited and scanned for this study. The results of ultrasound data analysis will be compared and correlated to the histopathology reports on routine core biopsy specimens, surgery reports, or radiology reports.

Ultrasound imaging and spectroscopy will consist of collecting three dimensional data. Regions of interest in each of the tumour images and in the adjacent normal tissue will be selected for analysis.

The purpose of the study is to test the hypothesis that quantitative ultrasound techniques including spectroscopy may be used as a non-invasive biomarker for characterization of suspected breast cancers. The main goal is to select and identify an optimal set of quantitative ultrasound parameters that can be used, non-invasively, to characterize suspected breast cancers, as identified based on the histopathology reports on core biopsy specimens, surgery reports, or radiology reports. Primary endpoint will correlate quantitative ultrasound parameters to the histopathological properties, as determined from pathology reports on core biopsy specimens, surgery reports, or radiology reports. The secondary endpoint in this study will include correlating the results of ultrasound-based breast cancer characterization with 2 and 5-years clinical outcomes.

This project is an observational/early validation study in human subjects that will use ultrasound imaging and spectroscopy to characterize suspected breast cancers. Patients will be imaged with ultrasound, and the acquired data will be analyzed using quantitative ultrasound techniques, in conjunction with textural analysis on generated parametric images. Results of quantitative ultrasound data analysis for these breast lumps will be compared to and correlated with histopathological characteristics from pathology reports on core biopsy specimens, surgery reports, or radiology reports.

As a primary endpoint, correlate changes in ultrasound backscatter parameters obtained using spectroscopic techniques, in conjunction with textural analysis on generated parametric images, to the histopathological characteristics from pathology reports on core biopsy specimens, surgery reports, or radiology reports.

The secondary endpoint in this study will include correlating the results of ultrasound-based breast cancer characterization with 2 and 5-years clinical outcomes.

Patients will be assessed using ultrasound imaging 3D and spectroscopy at the following intervals: once immediately prior to commencing neoadjuvant treatment. Once treatment begins, patients will be imaged at weeks 2, 4, 8, 12 and then prior to their surgery.

Ultrasound imaging 3D and Spectroscopy

The purpose of the study is to test the hypothesis that ultrasound imaging and spectroscopy may be used as a predictive marker of advanced tumour response to neoadjuvant treatment consisting of chemotherapy or concurrent chemotherapy-radiotherapy. The main goal is to select the best ultrasound spectroscopy parameter and vascular-distribution index to use as an early predictor of pathological complete or partial response as a primary endpoint and tumour size decrease as a secondary endpoint.

This project is an early validation study in human subjects that will use three-dimensional ultrasound imaging and spectroscopy to monitor cell death occurring at various time points during a patient's treatment for advanced breast cancer. Standard neoadjuvant treatments for breast cancer consisting of combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy will be used in patients. Reponses will be followed with ultrasound imaging and spectroscopy at regular predetermined time-points. The research is exploratory since upon data analysis it will examine the use of different ultrasound backscatter parameters as potential markers of cell death and correlate these with changes in tumour size and complete pathological response.

The primary endpoint of this study will be to correlate changes in ultrasound backscatter parameters obtained throughout the course of treatment with complete or partial pathological response.

Tumour size will be measured using conventional B-mode ultrasound imaging. Both the tumour's maximum dimensions length, width, and height in cm will be considered.

The Volumen of the tumor will be measured by conventional ultrasound in B mode. The volume of the tumor in cm3 will be considered.
