Patients with transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) group receive electrical stimulation of acupoints including Dazhui (DU14), Geshu (BL17), Zusanli (ST36), Sanyinjiao (SP6), and Hegu (LI4).

On the basis of routine nursing care, patients need to take Sanguisorba officinalis L., named Diyu Shengbai Pian (a Traditional Chinese Medicine) 3 times per day.

The patients of control group receive routine nursing care, including (1) to be observed the changes in patient condition, (2) to eat high-calories, high-protein, high-vitamin, easy-to-digest foods during chemotherapy, (3) to be treated by psychological care, (4) to be prevented against the occurrence of phlebiti, and (5) to use Ondansetron and Omeprazole as direction.

The patients will be treated by their assigned acupuncture stimulation in 7 days. The surface electrical stimulation devices and application parameter are: G6805-II pulse acupuncture treatment instrument from Shanghai Medical Technology Company, Ltd (Shanghai, China); sparse-dense wave stimulation (sparse wave 30Hz; dense wave 100Hz) with an intensity of 6-15 V; and the corresponding parts of the body experienced a slight quiver, with a duration 20 minutes each time.

TEAS

Sanguisorba officinalis L., a Leukogenic medication, named Diyu Shengbai Pian (Chengdu Diao Tianfu Pharmaceutical Group Co., Ltd., China) will be taken 0.4g each time by 3 times per day.

To investigate the effect of percutaneous electrical stimulation on chemotherapy-induced bone marrow suppression in patients with lung cancer.

Lung cancer is the malignant neoplasm with the highest incidence and mortality in China as well as worldwide. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) accounts for 80%-85% of all lung cancer cases. Chemotherapy is the preferred treatment method for NSCLC, but many patients cannot tolerate the adverse reactions of chemotherapy. Among the most common and most severe adverse reactions is bone marrow suppression. The more serious the bone marrow suppression, the higher the direct medical cost of chemotherapy. Literatures showed Acupuncture was used to treat patients with chemotherapy-induced bone marrow suppression. In this study, the effect of percutaneous electrical stimulation of acupoints including Dazhui (DU14), Geshu (BL17), Zusanli (ST36), Sanyinjiao (SP6), and Hegu (LI4) will be investigated, compared with the medication group treated by oral administration of prophylactic agents, and the control group received routine nursing care on chemotherapy-induced bone marrow suppression in patients with lung cancer.

The routine blood examinations of indicators of bone marrow suppression, including red blood cells (10\^12/L), hemoglobin (g/L), white blood cells (10\^9/L), and platelets (10\^9/L).

The Comfort Scale is assessed using General Comfort Questionnaire designed by KY Kolcaba. A preliminary experiment was conducted in 30 patients with NSCLC before the first visit, and the reliability coefficient of the scale was calculated; Cronbach's alpha = 0.932 indicated high internal consistency.

Transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation group patients received Transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (Neiguan \[PC6\], Yintang \[GV 29\], Zusanli \[ST36\]) for 30 min before the induction of anaesthesia until the end of the surgery and the night before operation, the first, second and third night after operation 30 min once a day with an altered frequency 2/100 Hz, disperse-dense waves, adjusted electricity intensity which was less than 10 mA.

In Control group, except the electronic stimulation was not applied, the treatment was the same as the Transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation group.

According to the traditional Chinese medicine 15,three acupuncture points were selected as the target points: bilateral Neiguan ,Yintang and bilateral Zusanli.. A transcutaneous electrical stimulator was used to provide an altered frequency 2/100 Hz,disperse-dense waves,and adjusted intensity which was less than 10mA.

Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is one of the common complications of cancer patients after operation with a 8.9%-46.1% incidence, which severely affecting patients' postoperative recovery, increasing the medical cost, affecting the social function of patients, reducing the quality of life and increasing the mortality.

Surgical trauma and perioperative pain can induce systematic inflammatory response and release systematic inflammatory mediators, which can enter the central nervous system (CNS) and lead to CNS inflammatory. In order to prevent the development of POCD among elder patients, the discovery of effective interventions reducing perioperative pain and inflammatory response is important.

Transcutaneous Electrical Acupoint Stimulation (TEAS) is a non-invasive alternative to needle-based electro-acupuncture (EA). It combines the acupuncture and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) by pasting the electrode piece on the acupoint instead of sticking the needles on the skin. TEAS can trigger the release of endogenous neurotransmitters, releasing endogenous analgesic substances, such as endorphins. TEAS also can reduce the intraoperative anesthetic consumption, postoperative pain score, postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV), and improve the postoperative recovery of patients. Recently, TEAS was found to improve the cognitive function of geriatric patients with silent lacunar infarction. However, the current TEAS mainly focus on intraoperative. The effect of perioperative TEAS on POCD is not clear.

Here, the effect of TEAS on POCD in geriatric adults undergoing radical resection of gastrointestinal tumors under general anesthesia was investigated to determine whether TEAS can decrease perioperative pain or inflammatory response to prevent the occurrence of POCD and to find out the relationship among perioperative TEAS, inflammatory response, postoperative pain, and POCD preliminarily.

This study aims to evaluate the effect of perioperative transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) on postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) in elderly patients who were diagnosed with gastrointestinal tumor and received radical resection of gastrointestinal tumors under general anesthesia and to determine the relationship among perioperative TEAS, inflammatory response, postoperative pain, and POCD preliminarily.

Patients were given 30min of TEAS before general anesthesia induction, 1th day and 2nd day after surgery.

Patients were given 30min of sham TEAS before general anesthesia induction,1th day and 2nd day after surgery.

Electric stimulation was given through electrode attached to specific acupoints for 30mins before general anesthesia induction,1th day and 2nd day after surgery.

The purpose of this study is to access the effect of Transcutaneous Electrical Acupoint Stimulation(TEAS) on the Incidence rate of Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS) in patients undergoing radical surgery for gastric cancer

Patients undergoing elective radical surgery for gastric cancer under general anesthesia were randomly assigned to three groups, control group , TEAS group and sham TEAS group.

TEAS group receiving TEAS before general anesthesia induction , 1th day and 2nd day after surgery. TEAS was given through electrodes attached to specific acupoints. The time for TEAS was 30min.

Sham TEAS group receiving sham TEAS before general anesthesia induction , 1th day and 2nd day after surgery. Sham TEAS was given through electrodes attached to non-acupoints. The time for sham TEAS was also 30min.

Control group were given no TEAS. Incidence rates of SIRS in each group were compared .Venous blood samples from all groups(control group , TEAS group and sham TEAS group) were collected before general anesthesia induction,1th day and 3rd day after surgery. Inflammatory cytokines index including interleukin-6,interleukin-10,Tumor Necrosis Factor- alpha(TNF-α),Interferon-γ(IFN-γ),Monocyte Chemotactic Protein 1(MCP-1),IgG,IgM were measured.

SIRS is defined as 2 or more of the following variables :

1. Fever of more than 38°C (100.4°F) or less than 36°C (96.8°F)
2. Heart rate of more than 90 beats per minute
3. Respiratory rate of more than 20 breaths per minute or arterial carbon dioxide tension (PaCO2) of less than 32mm Hg
4. Abnormal white blood cell count (\>12,000/µL or \< 4,000/µL or \>10% immature granulocyte forms)

Incidence rate of SIRS is calculated using the following formula:
