The goal of this behavioral research study is to learn if certain sexual behaviors increase the risk for developing head and neck cancers associated with a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV-16). Knowing this information could help doctors better teach patients about avoiding certain risk factors, which may help to prevent the disease.

SCCHN is believed to be caused by different types of viruses being exposed to the mucous membrane on the inside of the mouth, throat, and voice box, over a long period of time. This exposure results in changes in the cells of the mouth, throat, and voice box, which can lead to the development of cancer.

HPV-16 has been linked to SCCHN. Half of all cancers of the oropharynx (the middle part of the throat, the base of the tongue, and tonsils) may be caused by HPV-16. HPV-16 is normally spread sexually, and is one of the main causes of cervical cancer in women. By finding out if the virus is also spread sexually to the throat, doctors may be able to teach patients about risk factors for developing cancer in this area.

Study Procedures:

If you agree to take part in this study, you will be asked to complete a questionnaire about your sexual history, such as specific sexual practices, number of partners, exposure to HPV and other viruses, and any medical history related to HPV-16. The questionnaire will take 10-15 minutes to complete.

None of your personal identifying information will be attached to your questionnaire, and the questionnaire will be assigned a one-of-a-kind study code number.

To check your cancer diagnosis, your medical records will be reviewed.

This is an investigational study.

Up to 1,500 patients will be enrolled in this study. All will be enrolled at MD Anderson.

Self-questionnaires and semi-structured interview

The study is composed of three paper self-questionnaires to be filled in by the patients included at distance (\> 6 months) from their diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer, in order to limit the impact of the announcement on the filling out the questionnaires.

After verification of the eligibility criteria, the medical oncologist will present the study to patients coming to the ICL for a follow-up consultation as part of their regular care. The patients will meet with a clinical research nurse so that she can explain the again and answer any questions they may have. She will also give the patients the questionnaires questionnaires and will give a presentation of the questions asked. After this meeting, the patients will be given sufficient time to reflect on, which may extend until their next visit to the ICL, in order to express, if they wish, their opposition to participating in the study. If she agrees to participate, the patient can then complete the questionnaires as well as the complementary questionnaire and place them in a closed envelope to be given to the clinical research nurse. The completion of the questionnaires will be completely anonymous. The data of those who object to the use of their data will be deleted from the database.

After the completion of the questionnaires, and in order to allow a benefit for the patient, a semi-directive interview in the form of a teleconsultation with a psycho-oncologist and sexologist will be offered. The interviews are not mandatory.

The time to fill in the self-questionnaires is estimated at 30 minutes and the semi-directive interview can last up to one hour. Finally, at the end of the study, as part of her subsequent care, each patient participating in the study will have the possibility to renew a teleconsultation with the psycho-oncologist and sexologist if she feels the need. As the subject of the study may generate personal questions and lead to a request for psychological and/or sexological care.

This study aims to study in patients with cancer of the cervix or the body of the uterus, or the ovary between the time of diagnosis and 3 months after the end of the last treatment: the evolution of the relationship of couple, and more particularly of communication (verbal and non-verbal) concerning sexuality, before and during cancer.

The representations associated with sexuality and cancer seem antinomic: wellbeing / death, and yet combine in the experience of cancer. The latter has an impact on sexuality in terms of satisfaction or sexual activity and on the relationship in terms of support.

In addition, various studies show the psychological impact of treatments on the couple's relationship or the body image of women with cancer. Their abilities to seduce are affected and explain the decrease of their sexual activity during the treatments: a communication, valuing the femininity, would it then facilitate the relations of couple? There is no work that considers sexuality in a systematic way (sexual act and verbal and non-verbal communication) and apprehends its link with the evolution of the relationship, from the diagnosis of cancer to the end of treatments.

Longitudinal Study of the Couple Relationship of Women With Pelvic Cancer: Impact on Sexuality

Questionnaire SAQ : Sexual Activity Questionnaire, contains 21 items divided into three parts: the first part allows to know if a woman is sexually active or not, the second part allows to define the reasons for this activity or its absence. The third part of the questionnaire filled out by sexually active women aims to explore the pleasure generated by sex (desire, satisfaction, frequency), discomfort during intercourse, especially due to vaginal dryness and pain as well as the habits of the patient before the illness.

The questionnaire contains 23 questions and is estimated to take approximately 10 minutes to complete.

Primary Objectives:

1. To determine whether high-risk sexual behaviors are more common in patients with oropharyngeal cancer than in patients with head and neck cancers of other sub-sites.
2. To determine if high-risk sexual behaviors are more common in patients with HPV (human papillomavirus) associated head and neck cancer than those without evidence of HPV-16 infection.

Squamous cell cancer of the head and neck (SCCHN) is believed to be caused by the long-term exposure of the mucous membrane on the inside of the mouth to different types of cancer-causing agents. This results in changes in the mouth, which can lead to the development of cancer.

Infection with HPV-16 has been linked with SCCHN. Half of all cancers of the oropharynx (the middle part of the throat including the soft palate, base of the tongue, and tonsils) are caused by HPV-16. HPV-16 is normally sexually transmitted, and is the cause of cervical cancer in women. By finding out if the virus is also sexually transmitted to the oropharynx, doctors may be able to educate patients about risk factors for developing cancer in this region. Eventually, doctors may be able to vaccinate people who are at risk for getting this virus.

You have received this questionnaire because you gave researchers your verbal consent for the mail-out. Along with the questionnaire, included are 2 self-addressed stamped envelopes for you to return the questionnaire and consent separately.

If you agree to take part in this study, you will complete the questionnaire about your sexual history such as specific sexual practices and number of partners, exposure to HPV and other viruses, and any relevant medical history. This questionnaire should take about 10 minutes to complete. The questionnaire will be given a study code number so that your name or M. D. Anderson patient ID number will not appear on the questionnaire.

Once you have finished the questionnaire, for added privacy and confidentiality, you should place the signed consent form in 1 self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) and the completed questionnaire into the other self-addressed stamped envelope (SASE) that has been provided. Please mail both envelopes back within 15 days of receiving the questionnaire.

Once you have completed the questionnaire, your participation in this study is over.

This is an investigational study. About 1,267 patients will be enrolled in this study. All will be enrolled at M. D. Anderson.
